Resin Overlay

A laboratory processed composite resin onlay is  composed of a heat and pressure hardened resin material that has been in use since 1984. The advantages of using the hardened resin are many, most importantly we can save healthy tooth structure and actually strengthen the tooth rather than weaken it as we see with traditional silver fillings. It is fabricated by a laboratory technician that is specially trained and is pressure treated to provide a very dense, long lasting restoration.

The resin onlay is used where in the past a crown or cap was the only option. The ability to "bond" to the tooth makes this restoration outstanding and we think it is the finest option available. Another major advantage is that the onlay is tooth colored and becomes invisible as it blends into you surrounding natural teeth. Our entire staff has been specially trained to provide this excellent restoration and continues to strive to provide state of the art dental care that other dentists may End too time intensive or technique sensitive. This is what has always set us apart from others.

Until we place your permanent onlay, we placed a flexible resin temporary in your tooth today and it will remain in place until the laboratory fabricates your permanent restoration. The color and shape is not how your permanent restoration will look, but provides an important function in protecting your tooth until the permanent can be placed.

You should have no problems with your temporary, hut it is common to experience the following until your permanent is placed:

  • Sensitivity to chewing (try to chew as muck as possible on the other side)
  • Cold sensitivity (The temporary does not fit quite as well as the permanent)
  • Slight roughness to your tongue (the permanent will feel just like your other teeth)
  • A "squishy" sensation when biting down (You can eat anything you want with the permanent restoration)

These symptoms are normal and should subside when the permanent restoration is placed. if the temporary restoration should dislodge or become loose, feel rough or high, or if the tooth is very sensitive to hot or cold, he sure to call our office as soon as possible. Brush normally, hut do not floss that tooth because you could dislodge the temporary.

As always, our goal is to provide the very highest quality dental care available and at the same time make you feel as special to us as possible. We realize you have chosen us to take care of you and your trust is never taken lightly. If there is anything we can do to make your dental treatment more comfortable or enjoyable, please do not hesitate to let us know.
