Periodontal Therapy Can Relieve Arthritis Pain

As you know, I try to keep you, and all our patients, informed about new findings that address quality of life issues. Here is one I think is quite important for those who may be suffering from arthritis pain.

A new study at Case Western Reserve University may have found a new treatment option for people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Surprisingly it’s periodontal therapy. One more reason to maintain your checkup schedule. One more reason to appreciate the role our hygienist plays in keeping our patients healthy.

The study reveals that people who suffer from Periodontal disease and rheumatoid arthritis were able to reduce their pain, the number of swollen joints, and stiffness with non-surgical periodontal therapy. Now it is possible for physicians, dentists, and periodontologists to work in collaboration for the benefit of the patient.

The study points up that when we eliminate the infection and inflammation in the gums, patients with a severe kind of active rheumatoid arthritis can experience improvement in the signs and symptoms of that disease. This is the first time that a link between Periodontal disease and RA has been found.

What exactly is the beneficial periodontal therapy? It is the control of infection and gingival inflammation by scaling/root planing, plaque control, and following clear oral hygiene instructions. Both periodontal disease and RA diseases are characterized by the local destruction of hard and soft tissues as a consequence of inflammation.

The study also emphasizes what I have been stressing for a long time. The effects of chronic inflammation and infection of the gums are not confined to the mouth. Periodontal inflammation can also be a risk factor for patients who are susceptible to diseases such as RA, diabetes, and even heart disease. The bottom line is this: it is now becoming clear that systemic disease can have a detrimental impact on dental health and poor dental health has negative consequences for overall health.

Again, call our office at your earliest convenience to maintain your checkup and cleaning schedule. Teeth cleaning is more than making your smile brighter. It is very much about preventive health. We are always here to help and advise you. Call for your appointment at 212-838-8230.
