Yes, There Are Natural Ways To Improve Your Oral Health

New Findings Show Natural Ingredients Fight Periodontal Disease

by Jason S. Kasarsky, DDS

It’s been said, “You are not healthy unless you have good oral health.” Put another way, you neglect your oral health at your own peril. Take it from one who examines many  mouths each week. The tissue of the mouth is a kind of oral billboard that broadcasts loud and clear whether a patient may be suffering from larger health issues.

And by now, we should all realize the potentially dire consequences of poor oral health. Gum disease and enamel erosion are only the tip of the iceberg. As I have discussed previously, it’s well documented in study after study that periodontal disease (bleeding gums) places us at increased risk for heart disease, stroke, stomach ulcers, insulin resistance, low birth weight babies, and even cancer of the pancreas.

Thus, any discoveries that may help patients maintain optimum oral health and avoid periodontal disease are important to note. I happen to be one professional who encourages patients to consider natural ingredients as part of their comprehensive wellness program. Here are a few exciting new research findings regarding natural ingredients that you may wish to consider:

  1. Pomegranate Fruit Extract apparently provides protection to the arterial system – and significantly reduces inflammation and decreases the growth of the microorganisms that cause dental plaque.

  2. Coenzyme Q10. This naturally occurring compound decreases the depth of periodontal pockets and heals gums in patients with periodontal disease.

  3. Lactoferrin. This protein is a powerful immune system booster. It has also been shown to halt the growth of bacteria that cause periodontitis.

  4. Squalene. Who would have thought. This is an extract from shark liver oil. It is used to help support immune system health and boost the body’s resistance to infection. Squalene has a smooth texture making it useful in dental care products.

  5. Xylitol. This is a natural sweetener. It has been shown to eliminate bacteria in saliva, particularly the bacteria that is thought to cause tooth decay.

  6. Folic Acid. This natural ingredient can be effective in reducing redness in the gingival tissues and bleeding of the gums.

  7. Tea Tree Oil. Known for its qualities as an antiseptic, tea tree oil when applied in gel form, significantly reduces bleeding of the gums.

  8. Hydrogen Peroxide. This well known antiseptic that bubbles when applied to cuts also fights plaque formation. It effectively exposes oral bacteria that are hard to reach in the mouth with ordinary brushing and flossing. Swoosh with this and you get seriously cleaner teeth and gums.

The above natural ingredients are readily available to all, at reasonable cost. And each is a powerful aid in fighting our common enemy, periodontal disease. Given all we know at this point about the various links between periodontal disease and major health issues, it’s essential we strive for optimum oral health. Regular dental checkups are your first line of defense. The above natural ingredients are great aids to consider in your effort to remain healthy and live a long and productive life.
